If you are the owner of land zoned for residential use you are liable for a yearly tax of 3% of it’s value on 1 February 2024. It’s called a Residential Zoned Land Tax and the idea behind it is to discourage holding onto land that houses can be built on. Good news.
If you object to the residential zoning of your land you have until 1st June 2023 to file an appeal. with the local authority.
I would imagine the vegetable farmer outside Rush County Dublin will be doing just that. It turns out two of his fields that have been used for producing vegetables for years have been zoned residential, unbeknown to him. He could be facing an unaffordable tax liability on the value of the land. Not so good.
